Los Medanos is a public elementary school in Pittsburg, CA. Kristyn Wenzel is a resourceful young teacher who has already successfully procured science equipment for her 5th grade classroom via DonorsChoose and Chevron donations. Her classroom has just 2 computers, only one of which is connected to the internet. Most of her students are learning English as a second language and most have no internet at home.

Launch date was January 19, 2012, a wonderful donation service day for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Students are using the tablets in pairs during individual time while the teacher leads a small reading group. They have a custom class list, and CA 5th grade STAR tests on their tablets, as well as access to additional apps such as Periodic Table and U.S. Presidents.

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) is nationally recognized for its innovative and effective academic development programs. MESA engages thousands of underrepresented minority students so they excel in math and science and graduate with math-based degrees. Through MESA, students of color and girls achieve their full potential in mathematics, engineering, and science. MESA students in grades K-12 excel in a supportive, challenging, and fun learning community. Seattle MESA trains teachers in Seattle’s public elementary, middle and high schools, provides college readiness workshops for students and parents, and holds competitions for all MESA students.

Clarence Dancer, Jr., Seattle MESA Director, plans to purchase 5 Kindle Fire tablets for teachers to test out with Virtuoso Software in 5 different Seattle MESA classrooms. Irynsoft is providing MESA with a customized catalog of videos and tests.

MESA has been in Seattle since 1982 and is looking forward to using cutting edge technology to help their students access educational tools anytime, anywhere. Many MESA students work after school and also care for younger siblings, leaving them very little time to do homework.

Angela Hadaway is an innovative science and math teacher in the small town of Trinidad, CO. When she wanted wireless internet in her classroom, she went to Walmart and bought herself a router. When she came to the school, she and her dad started the Trinidad MESA program (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement), and last year her students earned 4 out of 5 CO MESA Student of the Year awards. She prides herself on getting students excited and engaged in hands-on learning. Now she plans to “flip” her classroom using tablets with Virtuoso.

Oasis for Orphans is a small non-profit group based in Chicago, IL, and supports an orphanage and Christian school in Kenya. Families who are members of Oasis each sponsor students and travel to Kenya to volunteer. Kenya has an 8th grade test that is “make or break” – students must pass it to move on. The test in held in December. They have no internet, and very little electricity. Irynsoft sent a Virtuoso Tablet to Jim O’Malley, and a staff member took it to Kenya February 13, 2012. Oasis plans to provide measurable data on improvement of the students due to usage of the Virtuoso Tablet. They will give the first test tablet to Mercy Naikuro, a promising student whose goal is to be a heart surgeon.

You can make a difference by donating to their tablet project!

Carol Scheuer is the Technology Coordinator for this public K-8 charter school for gifted children, and she teaches technology to all students. She reports that one of their biggest challenges is providing enough individualized learning opportunities for each child to soar onward in different directions within one classroom. As a public school, they have a wide range of economic status in their families, and cannot afford to purchase iPads for each student. Some students have access to much technology, while others lack even internet at home.

Ms. Scheuer earned her B.S. in Mathematics Education fromthe University of Central Florida and Master of Arts in Mathematics Education from Smith College. Menlo Park Academy was opened almost 4 years ago with a group of 37 students. Now it is a school of over 280 students, and still growing. With the belief that true learning involves the development of the “whole child”, MPA looks to technology to help us create an enriched environment designed to develop students’ skills, as well as to service their different intellectual, social, and emotional needs.
